There is an epidemic in the senior healthcare industry. Turnover of Certified Nurse Assistants (CNAs).
CNAs are responsible for the day to day care of the patients, and are usually the individuals with the most contact, and thus, most influence with patients and their comfort levels.
Research shows the total costs associated with turnover, range from 90 to 200 percent of annual salary, representing nearly 40% of pretax income for companies with high turnover rates (Cascio, 2006; Mitchell et al., 2001). Specific to healthcare organizations, employee retention is often cited as the “biggest concern” for people management (Health-e-Careers, 2015).
In the Institute’s research it was found that CNA pay is not a valid predictor of turnover or turnover intent. It is shown that the best predictor in increasing retention is the development of a positive and supportive environment. An environment that embodies a sense of meaning, membership, and empowerment; the foundations of the SEMCO program. (CLICK HERE FOR THAT RESEARCH SUMMARY)
PILOT STUDY: The Liautaud Institute, University of Illinois at Chicago has acquired grants to assess the affect of an evidence-based program they developed for corporate use, and applying it to reducing turnover of Certified Nurse Assistants (CNAs) in Senior Health Care Facilities. The program has proven to successfully impact retention by facilitating interpersonal relationships using standardized methods inspired by industrial manufacturing (ISO). SEMCO TRAINING: It's designed to improve environments. The program creates a culture shift within an organization by investing in its people. With over a decade of applied research spanning various study groups, universities, and businesses alike, SEMCO (CLICK HERE FOR MORE INFORMATION ON SEMCO) has proven itself a scientifically valid method for improving environments. The Institute is proposing to apply SEMCO to the healthcare industry with the primary goal to reduce CNA turnover.
